Office of Health Global Projects and Partnerships

Office of Health-Where Save the Children Works-Last Update: July 2007

ACCESS:  The ACCESS Program is a 5-year, global program cooperative agreement from USAID that aims to improve the health and survival of mothers and their newborns.  JHPIEGO implements the program in partnership with Save the Children, Constella Futures, the Academy for Educational Development, the American College of Nurse-Midwives and Interchurch Medical Assistance.  ACCESS works with USAID missions, governments, nongovernmental organizations, local communities and partner agencies in developing countries to achieve sustainable improvements in maternal and newborn health and survival.  ACCESS seeks to achieve large-scale advances in the health of women and newborns by expanding coverage, access and use of maternal and newborn health services through improving household health behaviors and practices.  Visit their website at www.accesstohealth.org

BASICS:  Basic Support for Institutionalizing Child Survival (BASICS) is a USAID project that helps scale up the coverage of interventions that have proven to be effective in preventing and treating the major causes of newborn and child mortality.  To achieve this mission, the project partners with ministries of health, other USAID projects, UN organizations and other donor agencies, private voluntary organizations, private practitioners, and NGOs. Since 1993, BASICS has worked in more than 50 countries, focusing on: newborn health; essential nutrition actions like vitamin A supplementation; immunization; management of childhood illness; treatment of diarrhea and pneumonia; and malaria control. In addition to strengthening the delivery of basic child health services, BASICS has expanded its technical scope to include pediatric HIV/AIDS, birth spacing, and child survival and nutrition in complex humanitarian crises. BASICS partner organizations include: Management Sciences for Health, John Snow Inc., Academy for Educational Development, Program for Applied Technology for Health, Save the Children, the Manoff Group, and TSL.  Visit their website at www.basics.org

ESD:  The Extending Service Delivery Project is a five-year, USAID-funded initiative aimed at increasing the availability and use of quality  reproductive health and family planning services in developing countries.  Focusing at the local level in poor, at-risk, and underserved communities, ESD intends to secure the permanency of quality and access to these services among individuals and communities.  Under the management of Pathfinder International, ESD is implemented in partnership with Management Sciences for Health, IntraHealth International, Meridian Group International, Inc., International Centre for Migration and Health, Save the Children, ADRA, and IRH of Georgetown University.  http://www.pathfind.org/site/PageServer?pagename=Major_Projects_ESD

The Policy Dialogue-PDI:  The Policy Dialogue and Implementation Project is a recently awarded partnership to improve the enabling environment for health, making it possible for men and women around the world to obtain and use the information and services they need for better health, especially in the areas of family planning/reproductive health, HIV/AIDS, and maternal health.  Save the Children will focus efforts on social mobilization/civil society mobilization, and maternal/newborn health policy.

TASC3:  The Technical Assistance and Support Contract (TASC3) is an Indefinite Quantity Contract (IQC) with 15 prime contractors. TASC3 will work worldwide and will have two separate tiers of contractors.  The first tier, TASC3-Global Health, will contain multiple prime contractors and many subcontractors, covering the entire spectrum of USAID-supported health, infectious diseases, and population areas. The second tier, TASC3-HIV/AIDS Research, will contain multiple contractors and a score of subcontractors, specializing in HIV/AIDS research activities. Through this partnership, Save the Children may participate in delivering short- and long-term technical and program assistance. http://ghiqc.usaid.gov/tasc3/about/index.html
